It’s a fine line between wanting your child to enjoy their new technology gift and making sure that they don’t use it too much! We don’t usually have this worry with other presnets that we give them, but its often the case with technology gifts.
I’ve developed some top tips to help with this.
The tips focus on giving your child the message that they have this great new present but healthy use of it is important!
Start ahead of time
The tips start by setting the scene in the days leading up to Christmas. Its simply having a chat to them about healthy technology- what its is and isn’t. Make sure you get their thoughts on it.
Technology Plan
Part of these tips include a Technology Plan. getting new technology is a perfect time to agree on screen times, screen-free zones, device curfews, acceptable activities, screen-free zones, safety, manners, sleep, exercise and digital citizenship. See here for this Online Technology Plan.
Talking together and agreeing on each of these points is important!!
It’s not a ‘set and forget’ scenario
Once you’ve decided what you want to put in your media plan and negotiated the points with your children, it’s important not to just lock it in and leave it.
