Sextortion is being threatened with the release of nude or sexual images unless you pay or comply and it is surging. In the last 6 months the ESafety commissioner has had over 2000 reports by teen boys. But its not only teens. One in seven adults have now experienced it, and in the last year cases involving people aged 60 and over have jumped by 130 per cent.
AI has changed the game. “Nudify” tools can fake explicit images from an ordinary photo, and scripts are auto-generated in any language or tone.
It often isn’t one person on the other end, it’s an organised crime syndicate and often they now use AI to generate everything and send it it thousands of people at the same time.
Most cases start on dating apps, in texts, or as a “wrong number” message.
The best protection is talking about it early, and without judgement.
If it’s happening to you or someone you love:
And if it’s your child or a loved one who’s told you be supportive. Its a time when they really need you.
